Active ventilation runs on fan energy. VPD control runs a whole AC plant.
Our active-ventilation package — three exhaust fans pulling outside air through a wet wall and the length of the house — is the low bill of the two paths: fan ventilation runs roughly 0.5 to 1 kilowatt-hour per square foot per year (UMass Extension), plus a small pump at the pad. What it buys is evaporative cooling, which is honest physics with a limit: it cools toward the wet-bulb temperature, so it drops 14 to 22°F in dry heat and only a few degrees in humid air (ACES/Auburn). A sealed VPD system — a large AC plant controlling temperature and humidity together — draws meaningfully more, in exchange for holding a setpoint the weather can't touch.

The cheapest heat is the heat you do not let escape.
A single-layer skin bleeds heat all night. An insulated envelope — insulated panel endwalls, an air-gap covering — holds it, and a retractable energy or thermal screen holds more: those screens commonly cut heating cost by 30 to 50%, with payback in one to four years depending on your climate and hours of use (UMass Extension, Westland). 04 — CANNABIS — THE DEHUMIDIFICATION BILL NOBODY QUOTES
A flower room breathes most of its water back into the air.
Roughly 70% of the water you irrigate comes back as vapor the room has to remove — a rule of thumb puts 100 gallons a day of watering at about 800 pints a day of moisture to pull out (HPAC Engineering). Worse, that load peaks at lights-off, exactly when ordinary air conditioning stops running, because comfort AC only dehumidifies as a byproduct of cooling. This is why a cannabis room needs a system that dehumidifies as its own job. In a PE-authored comparison study, an integrated HVACD system used about 15% less energy over a year than a high-efficiency VRF setup (PE-authored manufacturer study, 2023) — the waste in the decoupled system came from two boxes toggling against each other. Is active ventilation cheaper to run than VPD control?
Far cheaper. The active package's draw is fan energy — roughly 0.5–1 kilowatt-hour per square foot per year, plus a small pad pump — while a sealed VPD system runs a full AC plant. The tradeoff: evaporative cooling can only cool toward the wet-bulb temperature, so it weakens exactly on hot, humid days.
