A conventional stick-built commercial greenhouse is delivered as raw material: thousands of loose members, plates, and fasteners that a specialized crew cuts, fits, and bolts into a building over weeks or months. We counted a comparable 30×100 conventional bill of materials at 9,384 loose pieces — 129 different kinds of parts, ten bolt sizes, and 3.2 kilometers of wire and tape. The same building from us is pre-assembled in our Georgia shop down to 364 pieces — welded assemblies we finish before they ship, which is why the field work is bolting, not fabricating.

The rows that move the budget aren't the steel — steel costs what steel costs. They're the crew, the weeks, the crane, and the engineering line. A construction project carries construction overhead: mobilization, weather days, coordination between trades, and a schedule that other people's schedules can break. A product mostly doesn't.
03 — WHERE STICK-BUILT WINS
If your building can't be drawn on our grid, don't buy our building.
Honesty earns the next section, so: stick-built is the right answer when the geometry is the point. A conservatory footprint, a lean-to against an existing wall, a 45-ft clear span your process equipment demands, sidewalls over 14 feet — our platform is 30-ft modules in 20-ft length steps, and we don't bend it, because the wind ratings are engineered to the module. Stick-built also wins when you already employ a fabrication crew whose winter you need to fill, or when the building is genuinely one of a kind.

What stick-built should never win on is the excuse most often given for it — "kits aren't engineered." Ours ships with PE-stamped structural plans and published wind ratings to 160 mph. Ask any builder, us included, for the stamped sheet. That's what it's for.
04 — THE MIDDLE OPTION EVERYONE FORGETS
The cheap kit is a third product. Price the wind, not the wishful thinking.
Between stick-built and us sits the commodity hoop house: light tubing, film covering, a price per square foot that looks unbeatable. For season extension on a market farm it's a fine tool. As commercial infrastructure holding a crop worth six figures, it's a bet against the weather with no engineering behind the bet — most can't produce a stamped plan at any wind speed, which also means your county may not permit it and your lender may not finance it. If a quote is dramatically cheaper than everything else on your desk, that's usually the product you're holding.
Are greenhouse kits cheaper than stick-built construction?+
On total project cost, almost always — the savings come from the construction line: a 4-person crew for 10–14 days instead of a specialized crew for weeks, no crane, and engineering included instead of billed separately. On raw steel, prices are closer than brochures suggest.
Can a pre-assembled kit really be code-compliant?+
Yes. Every American Roots building ships with PE-stamped structural plans (engineered with Foresite Group, Peachtree Corners, GA) rated 120–160 mph to IBC / ASCE 7. The stamp — not the construction method — is what your permit office evaluates.
Do I need a contractor to assemble a greenhouse kit?+
You need four capable people, an impact drill, and 10–14 days. Many buyers self-perform with farm staff; others have us scope an installation crew in the quote. There's no welding or cutting on site — the 364 pieces are pre-assembled and bolt together with one kind of bolt — carriage bolts whose square necks seat in the hole, so nobody holds a wrench on the back side.
When is stick-built the better choice?+
When the geometry can't be drawn on a 30-ft module grid — conservatory shapes, lean-tos, extra-wide clear spans, sidewalls over 14 ft — or when the building is truly one of a kind. For rectangular commercial production space, the module wins on total cost.
